An identified and controlled instance of the document media which is stored for the purpose of preserving the document, and/or applied in the process of creating replications and/or copies of the document.

The document source is described and controlled by it's attributes, i.e. the document copy may be identified as the master copy an electronic media in a word processor format.

All document copies, replications and renditions, regardless of media and format, are spawned from the document source.

For an approved and revision controlled document, document source is replicated and applied for the creation of the new revision document. The approved document source is never changed.
